The Boston Institute for Non Profit Journalism
The Boston Institute for Nonprofit Journalism (BINJ) gathered participants from a range of backgrounds—many recent arrivals, some via family, study, or new jobs—who shared stories of both welcome and challenge as they adapted to Boston. Across conversations, participants described moments of genuine community support from neighbors and coworkers, but also spoke openly about the struggles they face: high housing costs, unaffordable healthcare, difficult job searches, transit woes, and, for some, experiences of racism or feeling unwelcome in certain neighborhoods. Despite these obstacles, there was a sense of determination to build better lives and a shared hope for a future Boston where inclusivity is real, everyday life is affordable and accessible, and everyone—regardless of background—can find belonging, opportunity, and support.
