Tagged Highlights It felt good to just be able to truly be myself I feel very supported whenever I think about going into the studio It feels cool to have a job that is focused on gaining skills It gets under my skin so bad and it makes me so angry Being at the helm of a lot of different community conversations There isn't that undercurrent we're just all there for each other I don't really think I'm taken seriously as a business owner Having instruments of this caliber really has just skyrocketed the things More people go to arts and events in Boston than all four sports teams combined You think that they're valueless and I think that's a shame More people engage with arts in Boston than all sports One of Corean Reynolds' big goals is she wants to make the T later Creating a system where arts and culture flows through interdepartmental It feels really disheartening to know how underappreciated these community spaces are I play a banjo and that is a black instrument Always not feeling welcomed here but still trying to figure out how to be a creator here You learned an instrument you had chorus you had all these different things Art and movement was the way that we were escaping it in the streets It's like an intentional asphyxiation of the arts because power is threatened The styles that are popular with different cultures are getting pushed out Oh shoot come on community The vibe here was completely different and there were mad not whatever That's where I feel the most support I know that you have disabilities you have challenges that impact you I can work my whole career as a teacher and never be able to afford They just want to dance all night long Making more community voice around it and having forums Having a little bit more of that in spaces that we don't often see it I would love the city of Boston to take advantage of their beautiful spaces Having the music that you like at a festival The support for us as young people was at an all-time high They called it the middle of the ground child I want to do the same thing I want to really get in there get our foot in the door I come through in the phase of working as a freelance illustrator It was a really big deal for me to have art in the MFA The way that the community showed up and showed out Cops just feeling it being Black in the city support in venues and events I went to If you're a good photographer in BIPOC you have opportunity Finding affordable places to show up and practice my art I love how tight-knit the community is and how just very much like DIY It just recently started and then it started becoming a thing out of scratch It feels like people can be more than just their job The shining city in and out of the trees as we say I found the Boston Poetry Slam at The Cantab Lounge My family as in the generation above me are survivors of the Khmer Rouge I think I dabble in way too many different art forms The whole position had been dissolved right after I moved in There was a calculated effort to basically murder every single artist We always had during the moment we was definitely complaining about dumb shit I was part of this nonprofit for artists and students and kids A very rewarding experience playing straight ahead jazz during the pandemic To see people really connecting and engaging with it Oh my God yeah you can do that thats so smart I don't have roots and I don't have friends already Everybody in the neighborhood all different types of people were like There's no real organic bridge to stop the pollution of inorganic energy Great Scott that was my hang-out every week for years Can we have these conversations literally every week almost every day I feel there's not a single space where we can gather Rebuilding a whole new system through it The whole thing about almost a separation of arts and culture Arts is more importantly connected to political education which is also stifled The rooted feeling of being a Bostonian or being from here More people engage with arts in Boston than all sports combined An intentional asphyxiation of the arts because power is threatened A lot of hoops to jump through in order to start sowing these seeds arts and culture are prioritized differently My spirit does not belong here because of all the racial BS These are the good ones that come together We are metalheads we are punks we are rockers we are everything I grew up as the only black kids in the vicinity Art and movement was the way that we were escaping it in the streets There's just more stuff that I'm interested in here I recognize that doing a show every week is not as impactful Things just started happening I got accepted to this pitch competition Our theater season is about to take off and I'm pretty excited I stayed and continued working in movement arts Rent control is one thing to keep the extended community What brought me to Boston is I wanted to expand my acting group I found the circus community here because I grew up doing circus I just really want to see more of us take to this It was like the first time Circus Up had done an outdoor festival My dad came from Canada as a Holocaust survivor's refugee Everyone comes from around the globe I appreciate being able to bring him to the museum that place that we go to perform every year and they have a little green room I would play ukulele on the side of the road in Central Square We need more non-profit places like that for adults who are bored They don't have to make us comfortable and they know that give them opportunities to grow in their skills and explore their interests I very often feel supported in dance spaces created by my peers I feel like I'm letting down people all the time I feel like they have a community here among other chronically ill folks I have felt supported within my community You feel that you're able to walk around with no issues this past May when I got accepted into the Boston 48 Hour Film Festival I missed out on opportunities because I wasn't living here I felt very supported in my community during a circus school trip I feel like that's also something that most artists have to remember They deserve their flowers too I got kicked out of my first rehearsal space I remember as a kid going to all these huge art installations I feel like even then it was a little more lively I remember on the tour there used to be this jazz club Keep everything here not just turn it into murals There's a hunger there's a need for something that's outside the academics I just put wheels on my keyboard just recently so I'm already thinking about not booking as many shows in the winter I need to be able to live There could be an initiative to do some research on how many people are coming into Boston people just want to create and live and support themselves There is no at all push for you to collaborate with people I think harboring more relationships within schools will be extremely important This train station is something special especially during the winter I hope I don't get carpal tunnel If it's anything that you have passion about just for younger people I feel like an alien everytime I walk out of where I live I feel like the art around the community reconnects there's always something delicious to discover and I love that about the city people will support you with other endeavors like if you're doing some fashion line
