Tagged Highlights Always not feeling welcomed here but still trying to figure out how to be a creator here Every time I go there the people that work here they just naturally know me I am the first and only person in my family that was born in the US We seem to still be segregated and we're not being able to meet Most of the people at my school were Dominican which I'm also Dominican They just want to dance all night long Having a little bit more of that in spaces that we don't often see it Showing history of people of color and all the great work I feel like folks there are in their own bubble at times I would love the city of Boston to take advantage of their beautiful spaces I'm going to hang out in Cambridge because I know that's where I'm welcomed We found a community it was in Guatemala you only get to see Guatemalans My small growing community stepped in and friends welcome me to their homes Mostly black and brown businesses and cafes and places to ULAs Culture and diversity is number one key Every time I go there the people that work here they just naturally know me I didn't know what I wanted to do but I did know My family as in the generation above me are survivors of the Khmer Rouge I am biracial it's a weird mix of a lot of different things There was a calculated effort to basically murder every single artist Can we have these conversations literally every week almost every day Oh you're not really proud to be black in Boston My family kept me grounded My daughters their generation is changing shit so beautiful Nothing really phases us watching black people who are metalheads I've seen in my own family how they were treated when they first moved We are so blessed with the richness of the culture and the buildings Where'd the culture go because it's not cheap to go out I grew my whole life sitting on these steps waiting for everybody Thinking a lot these days about Jewish inclusion safety and belonging I feel like a great starting point for me in terms of just the different kind of cultures Our elected officials having more diversity people of color people of just any type of life experience Both parents families came here in the 1840s fleeing the Irish genocide My dad's family came north from the south just to escape harsher conditions I fall in the middle of being not American My abuela she left from the Trujillo dictatorship and went to New York They went back from Cali to Boston back and forth You cant gentrify this area were going to build it up ourselves Boston history is taught that means that would make people want to preserve it I'm struggling because the margin of how low income and poverty fluctuates I love the north end you can walk around the streets I went there by myself and I was like itll be just a good opportunity to network My parents wanted to provide a better life for our family It is beautiful to see the support from that community in Boston One of the only places that eminent domain has been used for the people My dad had moved first until my mom was able to come My dad's side of the family they're originally from Cape Verde My parents moved into the United States when they were 20 My grandma came here from Dominican Republic in 1975 My mom moved to Boston from Trinidad and Tobago when she was 11 It's harder to get into schools and jobs and all of those types of things They'll discriminate against you they'll try to overcharge I feel like I've had a very similar experience to most people here
